Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about starting your Kolam journey with Dotify Creations.

1. Learning & Beginners

I have zero drawing experience. Is this book really for me? Yes! Our books are the ultimate beginner’s guide to kolam. Unlike other books that start with complex designs, we start with the simplest 2-dot grids. This allows you to master the basic curves and loops before graduating to larger patterns. It is the perfect step-by-step introduction to Indian floor art for absolute novices.

Are these books suitable for children? Highly recommended! Because we start with small 2-dot patterns, children find it easy and rewarding to complete a design. It helps improve fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination, and focus. Many parents use our books as a cultural activity book to introduce their kids to South Indian traditions in a fun, low-pressure way.

What is the difference between Rangoli and Sikku Kolam? While often used interchangeably, there is a difference. Rangoli usually refers to freehand art filled with bright colors. Sikku Kolam (or Neli / Kambi Kolam) involves drawing lines that loop around a grid of dots without touching them. Our books focus on teaching you the logic of these geometric knot patterns, which are excellent for brain training.

2. Book Format & Features

Do you offer PDF or digital versions of the books? Currently, we offer only physical paperback books. We differ from others because we believe drawing kolam is a tactile, screen-free activity that works best with a pen or pencil on paper. Our books are designed as interactive workbooks—offering you a much-needed break from digital screens.

Do I need a separate notebook to practice? No, you don't! These are all-in-one activity books. Next to each design, we provide a blank dot grid so you can copy and practice the pattern immediately right inside the book. It is a self-contained course in pulli kolam.

What kind of pen or pencil should I use? The paper in our books is high quality and suitable for pencils, ballpoint pens, and fine-liners. We recommend starting with a pencil so you can erase mistakes as you learn the flow of the sikku curves.
